A family touring a senior living dining room

Before you go

Plan to tour at least two or three communities, ideally on the same day or week so you can compare. If possible, visit around mealtime and stay for an activity. Bring a notebook or use your phone to jot down impressions right away.

Care and staffing

  • What are your staff-to-resident ratios during the day and overnight?
  • Is there a nurse on site, and during what hours?
  • How do you assess care needs, and how often is the care plan updated?
  • What happens if my loved one’s needs increase?
  • How long have your key staff members worked here?

Costs and contracts

  • What is included in the monthly fee, and what costs extra?
  • How are levels of care priced?
  • How much have rates increased over the past few years?
  • Are there move-in, community, or entrance fees?
  • What is the policy if we need to move out?

Daily life

  • Can we see an activity calendar and join an activity?
  • Can we try a meal in the dining room?
  • How are dietary needs and preferences handled?
  • Is transportation available for appointments and outings?
  • Are pets allowed?

Safety and communication

  • How do you handle emergencies and falls?
  • How are medications stored and given?
  • How and how often do you communicate with families?
  • Can I see your most recent state inspection report?
  • What security measures are in place?

Trust your instincts

  • Do residents seem engaged and well cared for?
  • Do staff greet residents by name?
  • Does the community feel clean and smell fresh?
  • Could you picture your loved one here?
  • How did the staff treat you during the visit?
